PEOPLE-POWERED DEMOCRACY – mAY 2026

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our People Powered Democracy forum on 31 May to share their ideas and hear from our compelling speakers. The afternoon tea afterwards enabled lots of enjoyable follow-up discussions and building of connections.

Here is a recording of the event. In the recording, you will hear from:

  • Jane Morton from Beyond Billionaires, speaking about our campaign to resist the economic and political power of the billionaires, and the current opportunity to reach out to federal independents who are discussing forming a party, to suggest that they form a grouping based on a commitment to local and national deliberative democracy
  • Eddie Kowalski from Conversations at the Crossroads, speaking about their launch and their vision for large-scale direct democracy
  • Sonia Randhawa from the Sortition Foundation, speaking about Citizens’ Assemblies and how to combine small-scale representative deliberative decision-making with input from a much wider group
  • Andrew George from Beyond Billionaires, speaking about the impending energy crisis, and the overlap between building community for resilience and building community for democracy
  • Craig Lambie from Deliberative Super, speaking about his vision for a party of true independents, running for Senate seats, committed to voting based on the recommendations of a national Citizens’ Assembly
  • Plus interesting conversations between the speakers synthesising their ideas, and questions. comments and proposals from the attendees.

launch – May 2026

Our campaign launched at the time of the Australia tour by Gary Stevenson, ‘the People’s Economist’.

Inspired by Gary, we initially called ourselves ‘Tax Wealth Not Work‘. By the time of our launch event on 16 May 2026, however, we were already considering a broader focus that included more emphasis on transforming politics as well as the economy.
